With deep sadness we mark the passing of Donny Gerrard, as beautiful and soulful a singer as he was a man. Our band, crew and I send our sincere condolences to his wife and family and to Mavis and her band and crew as well. We were blessed to become friends and get to hear the magic he brought every night to Mavis’ sets when we toured the U.S. together on my Slipstream Tour back in 2012-13. This year’s event, hosted by Ciara, will take place March 2 at the YouTube Theater at L.A.’s Hollywood Park and for the first time ever, tickets to attend the Women in Music Awards will be available to the public. Tickets will go on sale in February.

The annual Women in Music event recognizes music’s top female artists, producers and executives for their contributions to music industry and their communities. Bonnie Raitt will receive the Icon Award, and Gabby Barrett will receive the Rising Star Award presented by Honda.

Phoebe Bridgers is 2022’s Trailblazer Award recipient, and Doja Cat will be honored with the Powerhouse Award. Karol G will receive the Rule Breaker Award, Saweetie will receive the Game Changer Award and Summer Walker gets this year’s Chartbreaker Award.

All of the aforementioned honorees will also perform at the annual ceremony. Additionally, Reservoir Media’s Founder and CEO Golnar Khosrowshahi will receive the Executive of the Year Award.

Bonnie made her professional debut performing in and around Philadelphia in 1969 shortly after taking a break from college to explore a career in music. As a lover of folk music she heard at camp, she picked up the guitar around 9 years old to play songs by her heroes Joan Baez, Odetta and Bob Dylan. 

Always a fan of Ray Charles, Fats Domino and Motown as well, she first fell hard for the blues through The Rolling Stones and English bands who turned the world onto Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf in the mid-sixties. 

She fell under the spell of Country blues at 14 and taught herself slide and blues guitar listening to records until she had the great opportunity to befriend and learn from legendary Blues artists like Mississippi Fred McDowell, Muddy Waters, Son House and Sippie Wallace. What started out as a hobby, through a kismet of timing and opportunity, became a career.

“One of my great hopes and intentions for next year is help find a way to pull back from our toxic standoffs—each in separate corners of self-righteous and hardened surety that ‘we’re right’ and ’they’re wrong.’ No one wins when there is no mutual coming together for a bigger purpose of finding solutions and some middle ground. I’d like to support whatever efforts I can to help us find some common ground, kindness and empathy—work together and come up with solutions to our common crises. Aside from that, I’m really looking forward to getting back on the road and releasing a new album in April. I pray we can all do what it takes to stay safe and get back to enjoying all the joyful things—like live music—together.”
