Billboard: AFTER ‘ROE’: MUSIC’S LEADERS ON HOW TO TAKE ACTION

29 July 2022

Bonnie writes about her experiences with tour activism and fundraising for a special feature in Billboard.

“One of the most important pieces of advice I was given is to try and not get discouraged. Never give up—even when it feels like the tide is turned against everything you hold dear. That’s when your passion and commitment matter even more. As my friend and inspiration Mavis Staples sings, ‘Don’t let nobody turn you around…we’re gonna keep on marchin…’ We’re all in this together—and together’s how we’ll make it through.” – Bonnie Raitt

Message on the overturning of Roe v. Wade

28 June 2022

Like many of you, I am reeling in the wake of the devastating ruling overturning Roe v. Wade and how the lives and reproductive health of women have already been impacted across the country. The stress of additional Supreme Court decisions looming this week and Justice Thomas’ intimation that other constitutionally-protected rights (to contraception and same-sex marriage) are also on the table is all weighing very heavily. The Dobbs ruling only exacerbates the inequity in health care for women of color and those communities already struggling. I think this editorial piece is particularly strong advocacy:
LA Times Editorial: Congress must protect rights to contraception and same-sex relationships

To learn more about the disproportionate suffering that the dismantling of reproductive rights will have on women of color, I recommend reading the pieces linked below.

There is much to feel and process right now, while we gather ourselves and move forward together to support women and families who are faced with immediate hardship. Let’s stay vigilant and tuned in to what activists and attorneys on the front lines are doing to protect access to safe abortions (particularly in those states that are contemplating outright bans on the procedure,) as well as to protect contraception and family planning advice. Let’s keep up our support in all the ways we can. We’re all in this together! — Bonnie

Review: At Leader Bank Pavilion, Bonnie Raitt’s excellence is no surprise

18 June 2022

By Stuart Munro
The Boston Globe

Bonnie Raitt is nothing if not generous, and during her 90 minutes on stage at Leader Bank Pavilion Friday night, that characteristic showed up again and again. She made sure the audience knew who was playing with her by introducing her band (including Boston’s own guitar master Duke Levine — “hometown team!,” Raitt exclaimed) after the second song instead of toward the show’s end. AMERICAN SONGWRITER – Bonnie Raitt Inspires on Album ‘Just Like That…’

9 June 2022

BY TINA BENITEZ-EVES

Watching a human interest segment on the news in 2018, Bonnie Raitt couldn’t pull away from the story of a woman who donated her child’s organ and was about to meet the recipient of her son’s heart for the first time. The man sat with her and asked if she would like to put her head on his chest so she could hear her son’s heart. “I just lost it,” says Raitt. “It was the most moving and surprising thing. I wasn’t expecting it. I vowed right then that I wanted to write a song about what that would take.”

Surprise nods from Billboard this week

9 June 2022

Another wonderful surprise this week as Bonnie’s recording of ‘Made Up Mind’ lands on Billboard’s “50 Best Songs of 2022 So Far: Staff List.” The song was written by The Bros. Landreth and Jonathan Singleton (and originally released in 2014 on The Bros. Landreth album Let It Lie.) As soon as she heard it, Bonnie just knew she had to cut it!

Billboard as well acknowledged Bonnie’s label by featuring Redwing Records at the top of their “2022 Indie Power Players” list and reflected back on her Women In Music Icon award acceptance speech in March 2022 when Bonnie “gave a shoutout to fellow female artists and musical mentors, plus praised the ‘mighty core’ of women in her organization to whom she was ‘extremely indebted,’ including her Redwing Records co-directors.” Thank you, Billboard for these appreciations and acknowledgements. It’s been quite a ride so far for Just Like That… !
